Nicotine Pouch Glossary: All-White, Slim, Nicotine Salt and More

New to nicotine pouches and running into unfamiliar words on the can or in reviews? Here's a plain-English glossary of the terms you'll see most often, so you can shop and compare with confidence.

The essential terms

Nicotine pouch

A small, pre-portioned pouch placed between the gum and upper lip. It contains nicotine, plant fibres, flavouring and pH adjusters — but no tobacco leaf.

All-white / white snus

Common nicknames for tobacco-free nicotine pouches, referring to their white colour (versus brown tobacco snus). “White snus” and “all-white” generally mean the same thing as a nicotine pouch.

Slim / mini / regular

Pouch formats. Slim is long and narrow, mini is small and discreet, and regular is wider and thicker. Format is about size, not strength.

mg per pouch

The nicotine content of one pouch, in milligrams. Higher numbers mean more nicotine. Some cans instead show mg per gram, which isn't directly comparable — see our strength guide.

Nicotine salt

A form of nicotine (nicotine combined with an acid) used in many pouches. It's often described as feeling smoother than freebase nicotine at a similar strength.

pH

A measure of acidity/alkalinity. A higher pH speeds nicotine absorption, so it affects how strong a pouch feels — not how it tastes.

Dry vs moist

Moisture level affects release speed. Moist pouches release faster; drier ones release more slowly and drip less.

Tobacco-free / tobacco-derived

“Tobacco-free” means the pouch contains no tobacco leaf. The nicotine inside can still be tobacco-derived or synthetic.

Refill can / portion

A “portion” is a single pouch. A refill can is a standard can of pouches you buy to restock.

PMTA / MRTP

U.S. regulatory terms. A PMTA authorization lets a product be sold; an MRTP order (rarer) allows a specific reduced-risk claim. Both are U.S. FDA processes and vary by product.

Just getting started? Our beginner's guide ties all of these together, and a mix pack is an easy first purchase.

Important: Nicotine pouches are for adults only (18+, or the legal age in your country) who already use nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance. They are not a smoking-cessation aid and are not suitable for non-users, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone with a relevant medical condition. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Laws differ by country and region — check what applies where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Is “all-white” the same as a nicotine pouch?

Yes. “All-white” and “white snus” are common nicknames for tobacco-free nicotine pouches.

What's the difference between mg per pouch and mg per gram?

mg per pouch is the total nicotine in one pouch; mg per gram is the concentration. Check which one a can lists before comparing.

Does nicotine salt mean it's stronger?

Not necessarily. Nicotine salt is a form of nicotine often described as smoother; strength still depends on the mg and pH.
