Nicotine Strength Explained: mg per Pouch and How to Choose
Strength is the number people get wrong most often. Pick too high and the experience can be unpleasant; too low and it may feel like nothing. This guide explains what the milligram figure means, how the tiers compare, and — importantly — why the number alone doesn't tell you how strong a pouch will actually feel.
What does the mg figure mean?
Most cans show nicotine content as milligrams per pouch (mg/pouch). A higher number means more nicotine is available in each pouch. Some brands instead print mg per gram (mg/g), which isn't directly comparable, so it's always worth checking which measure a can is using before comparing two products.
Strength tiers compared
There's no universal industry standard, so these bands are a practical guide rather than fixed rules. We group our range so you can shop by how strong you want it:
| Tier | Approx. mg/pouch* | Best for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nicotine-free | 0 mg | Flavour without nicotine, or trying the format | Nicotine-free |
| Normal | approx. 4–9 mg | First-timers and lighter use | Normal |
| Strong | approx. 10–15 mg | Regular users wanting more | Strong |
| Extra strong | approx. 16 mg and above | Seasoned, high-tolerance users | Extra strong |
*Bands are approximate and vary by brand. Always check the figure printed on each can.
Why mg isn't the whole story
Two pouches labelled the same can feel very different, because perceived strength also depends on:
- pH — a higher pH speeds nicotine absorption, so the hit feels stronger and faster.
- Moisture — moister pouches release faster; drier pouches release more slowly and steadily.
- Format — a slim pouch has more surface contact than a mini.
- Your tolerance — the single biggest factor. The same pouch feels mild to a daily user and intense to a beginner.
How to choose your strength
- New to nicotine pouches? Start in the Normal range — or even nicotine-free to learn the format first.
- Coming from another nicotine product? A Normal-to-Strong option is usually a comfortable match.
- Experienced and want more? Move up to Strong or Extra strong, ideally one step at a time.
Golden rule: when unsure, size down. It's easy to move up later, and the most common reason for a bad first experience is starting too strong. A mix pack lets you feel the difference between tiers safely.

Important: Nicotine pouches are intended for adults only (18+, or the legal age in your country) who already use nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance, and higher-strength pouches carry a greater risk of unpleasant effects such as nausea and dizziness. These products are not a smoking-cessation aid and are not suitable for non-users, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone with a relevant medical condition. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Laws differ by country — check what applies where you live.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good nicotine pouch strength for beginners?
A Normal-tier pouch (roughly 4–9 mg) is the usual starting point, and nicotine-free options let you learn the format with no nicotine at all.
Why does a higher-mg pouch sometimes feel weaker than a lower one?
Because pH, moisture, format and your own tolerance all affect perceived strength — a well-balanced lower-mg pouch can feel punchier than a higher-mg one.
Is mg per pouch the same as mg per gram?
No. mg/pouch is the total nicotine in one pouch, while mg/g is the concentration. Check which one a can lists before comparing products.
